Faculty of Science Level II students, in partnership with the Buddhist Society of Faculty, successfully held the Annual Pirith Chanting Ceremony at the KG hall, Faculty of Science on January 12th and 13th, 2023. The ceremony was attended by all students and staff and was followed by the morning alms-giving to twelve Buddhist monks. The event’s main goal was to invoke blessings on the university’s future endeavours and the student’s academic pursuits.

On January 3rd 2023, the Faculty of Science at the University of Colombo celebrated the grand opening of its new board room. The ceremony was attended by the vice chancellor of the university, as well as several other distinguished guests.

The new board room, which is located in the heart of the Faculty of Science, has been designed to provide a comfortable and modern space for meetings, presentations, and discussions.

During the ceremony, the vice chancellor praised the Faculty of Science for its commitment to providing students with the best possible educational experience. He emphasized the importance of having a dedicated space for meetings and discussions, and praised the faculty for its efforts to create such a space.

The opening of the new board room is just one of many exciting developments at the Faculty of Science. With its cutting-edge research facilities, top-ranked faculty, and strong commitment to student success, the Faculty of Science is poised to continue its tradition of excellence for years to come.

The Annual Research Symposium (ARS) of the University of Colombo, which unifies all symposia held by the respective Faculties, Institutes, Campus, School and the library of the University, is one of the main events in the University calendar. This year, it will be held on the 16th of November 2022 at the Prof. V. K. Samaranayake Auditorium of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). The theme of this year’s research symposium, “Digital Transformation and Innovative Approaches to Mitigate Challenges in the Higher Education Sector,” aptly suited the current challenges faced by the University.

An awareness session on “Fire Safety and Prevention” was held on 16th September 2022 at the ILC Seminar hall of the Faculty of Science successfully. The session was conducted by Mr. U.S. Kalansuriya, Station Officer – Training Section at C M C Fire Service Department.

This session was organized by the Non-academic Staff Development Committee of the Faculty of Science with the intention of educating its staff regarding fire safety and the fire precaution at the workplace. Several academic and non academic staff members participated in the event.

Gender-based harassment is a serious workplace issue that can bring about various psychological, physical and work- related consequences to victims. In addition, it can also lead to increased financial stress for the victims because they can be forced to leave jobs or change jobs to avoid harassment. In fact, harassment can significantly alter a person's career attainment. Within this context, this awareness session will highlight important aspects of gender-based harassment and detail the legal and policy avenues available to victims.
